Get moving! Studies have found that sitting for a long time really accelerates aging!

Gerocomia 08-04

Researchers from the University of California, San Diego proved that the cells of elderly women who spend less than 30 minutes a day for moderate or intense exercise or who sit for more than 10 hours have a biological age 8 years older than those who sit for a shorter time. This study was recently published in "American Journal of Epidemiology" and they found that sedentary human cells have shorter telomeres. Telomeres are small caps at the ends of DNA that protect chromosomes and become more and more important with age. Shorter.

As cells age, telomeres usually become shorter. Health factors such as obesity and smoking will accelerate the shortening of telomeres. Telomere shortening is involved in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, diabetes and many tumors.

"Our research found that sitting for a long time accelerates the shortening of telomerase, and the age we think is often inconsistent with the biological age." said research leader, Dr. Aladdin Shadyab of San Diego School of Medicine, Family Medicine and Public Health. Shadyab and his research team believe they are the first research team to objectively detect how sedentary and exercise affect age markers.

A total of 1,500 women between the ages of 64-95 participated in this study. They are part of the larger national longitudinal study-the "Women's Health Initiative", which focuses on the determinants of chronic diseases in menopausal women. Participants completed a questionnaire designed by Shadyab and his research team. In order to track their movement for several days, they carried an accelerator on the participant's right hip.

Shadyab said: "We found that if women who are sedentary exercise more than 30 minutes a day, their telomeres will not become shorter. This is the national recommended exercise standard. But research on the benefits of exercise should start when people are young. Tracking, we believe that physical activity should be our daily activity, even if we have reached the age of 80.” Shadyab believes that the next step in research will examine how exercise affects the telomere length of young men.
