Children under 5 may be more likely to spread the new coronavirus than adults

China News Network 08-03

According to Singapore’s Lianhe Zaobao, researchers recently discovered that the quality of the genetic material of the new coronavirus gene in the nasal cavity of children under 5 years old is 10 to 100 times that of adults and older children. This means Therefore, young children may be the main "driving force" for the spread of the virus in the community.

According to reports, this study was published in "JAMA Pediatrics" (JAMA Pediatrics). Between March 23 and April 27, the researchers took 145 patients with mild to moderate disease in Chicago and tested them with nasal swabs within a week of their symptoms. The patients were divided into three groups: 46 children under 5 years old, 51 children and teenagers between 5 and 17 years old, and 48 adults between 18 and 65 years old.

A research team led by Sargent, a doctor at Ann and Luli Children's Hospital, observed that "the genetic material of the new coronavirus in the upper respiratory tract of young children is 10 to 100 times that of adults or older children."

The authors added that a recent laboratory study showed that the more viral genes and genetic material in a patient's body, the more infectious viruses will reproduce.

Previous studies have also shown that if the amount of respiratory fusion virus (RSV) in young children is high, they are more likely to transmit the disease.

In this regard, the research team pointed out: “Therefore, young children may be an important driving force for the spread of the new coronavirus in the population.” They believe that “children’s behavior and habits, coupled with the confined spaces of schools or nurseries, make people worry about the new coronavirus in this Spread among groups."

However, the conclusions of the research team are contrary to those of the health authorities. It is generally believed that young children are less likely to get severe illness and are less likely to spread the virus than adults.
